SafeGuard: AI construction site safety, now with 360° remote inspections

How SafeGuard uses AI to check PPE and risky behaviour on building sites, and what the new 360° remote inspections add for safety teams.

On a building site, the gap between a rule and what actually happens is often a few metres and a few minutes. A helmet comes off in the heat, a vest stays in the van, someone steps into an area that should be closed. Safety managers cannot be on every site at once, and paper checklists only tell you what was true when someone last walked round. We built SafeGuard to narrow that gap with AI, and the latest update adds something site teams kept asking for: 360° remote inspections.

The problem we started from

HSE managers, site safety coordinators and construction companies told us the same thing: the rules are clear, but checking them is slow and patchy. One person may be responsible for several sites. Inspections take travel time. And when something goes wrong, it is hard to reconstruct what happened and to show that checks were done. We wanted a tool that watches continuously, raises the alarm in the moment and leaves an audit trail behind.

What SafeGuard does

SafeGuard is an AI safety supervisor for building sites. A phone camera or a fixed site camera is enough to start.

  • Live monitor: computer vision checks protective equipment such as helmets, high-visibility vests and gloves, and flags risky behaviour in real time. Danger zones can be set up with geofencing.
  • Instant alarms: every violation triggers an alert with a snapshot as visual evidence, so the team can act straight away and document what happened.
  • Dashboard and reports: a compliance score, violations per day and site trends, plus PDF reports ready for audits and safety meetings.
  • AI Safety Auditor: an assistant that answers workplace-safety and regulatory questions, prepares checklists and helps analyse near misses.
  • Multi-site: several sites with their own geofences, and users with different roles. Access uses an account provided by the company, on the company's own server.

New in September: 360° remote inspections

Version 1.5, released in September 2026 on the App Store and Google Play, adds 360° tele-inspections. With a 360 camera (the release supports the Insta360 Pro 2), an inspector can walk a site remotely, either live with low latency or by reviewing a recording later.

  • Findings are logged with a note, a severity level and a photo of the exact view the inspector was looking at.
  • Each site keeps its own archive of inspections, so you can compare visits over time.
  • Already-stitched 360 recordings can be uploaded and reviewed in the same way.
  • On a Meta Quest headset, the inspection can be opened from the headset's browser for a more immersive walk-through.

The practical effect is simple: a coordinator responsible for several sites can carry out more frequent checks without spending the day driving, and every finding is tied to a precise point in the site.

AI is most useful on a building site when it turns an occasional check into a continuous one, and leaves evidence behind.

What we learned building it

Detecting a helmet in a clean image is the easy part. The real work is in everything around it: dust, glare, people partly hidden by scaffolding, cameras moved from one day to the next. Alarms must be useful rather than noisy, otherwise people stop looking at them. That is why every alert carries a snapshot, and why reports focus on trends rather than single events.

We also learned that AI on a workplace camera has to be introduced with care. Workers should know what is monitored and why, data should stay under the company's control, and the system should support people rather than replace their judgement. Under the GDPR and the EU AI Act, being transparent about AI systems used at work is part of doing this properly, not an afterthought. SafeGuard runs on the company's server with role-based access for exactly that reason.

Where to start

For a construction company, a sensible first step is one site, one or two cameras and a clear list of what to watch: PPE, a couple of danger zones, and a weekly report reviewed in the safety meeting. Once the team trusts the alerts, remote 360° inspections make it possible to extend the same discipline to sites that are harder to reach.

SafeGuard is available on the App Store and Google Play; access requires an account provided by your company.

How Vivig can help

SafeGuard is one of the apps we design, build and publish at Vivig Consulting, each using AI where it saves time or prevents a mistake. If you have a process in your company that depends on someone checking things by eye, we can help you work out whether AI is the right tool, and our AI Evolution Program trains teams to use these tools well.
